Just finished Wuthering Heights, interesting... but I really hate it.
I hate that kind of obsessive love.
It ruins reality and makes people think love is painful or difficult.
Hardships are difficult and trials are painful, but love is not.
Reminds me of an excellent Jon Foreman quote...
"In our barcode media, love is often portrayed as consumption. As consumers in a commercial driven culture we can begin to view other souls as objects, or potential cures for our deepest fears and insecurities. “Perhaps if I found the right lover I would no longer feel this deep existential despair.” But of course no human soul could be the Constant Other, the face that will never go away. Only the infinite can fill that role. But the silence can be deafening. It’s a fearful thing to be alone. Do you love me enough to let me go? “I can’t live without you”- “I would die if you ever left me”- These are not the songs of love, these are the songs of consumption."
It's crazy too that this terrible kind of love was invented so long ago. I like the way that J.K. Rowling put a really good spin on the Heathcliff character with Snape though. Snape is not desperate and he is not evil. He finds ways to live beyond his love's death, and to make his life meaningful without Lily in it. That's why I still love him.
Everyone makes every kind of love sound overly dramatic. I felt Wuthering Heights was an alright read. I've read better.
